Здание ин-тов геологии и минералогии (ИГМ) и нефтегазовой геологии (ИНГГ) The V.S. Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IGM SB RAS) is among the leading academic institutions in Russia.It performs both pure and applied research in various fields of geosciences: geodynamics, tectonics, magmatism, metamorphism, petrology, geochemistry, mineral formation,metallogeny, environment and climate global change, engineering geology, geo-information technologies, etc.

The Institute succeeds to the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) founded in 1957 by academician Andrey A.Trofimukwho, together with Vladimir S. Sobolev, laid the foundation for theprinciples and ways of scientific work.

Currently theInstitute comprises eighteenlaboratoriesand several technological groups which belong to two divisions: geologyandmineralogy. IGM employs about700 people in total, among them about400 researchers, including full (N.P. Pokhilenko, N.V. Sobolev, V.V. Reverdatto) and correspondent (G.V. Polyakov, V.S. Shatsky) members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and more than 200 doctors and candidatesof sciences (over70 and 180, respectively). Nikolay P. Pokhilenko, full member of the Academy, has headed the Institute since 2007.

Thework of researchersfromIGM complies with the highest international standards and fits the current world trends in geosciences. It contributes to the most important achievements in the Russian Academy of Sciences and its Siberian Branchpresented in annual reports.

Theresultsobtainedat IGM are published yearly in 300 books and papers on average, out of which three quarters are rated in the Web of Knowledge international database. AboutfiftyworkersoftheInstitutehavehad morethan 100 publicationsforthepastsevenyearsand are on the list of most active and highly cited Russian scientists (the so-called Stern list). Thisisthebestresultingeosciencesamong the institutions oftheRussianAcademy of Sciences and one of best resultsover the Siberian Branch of the Academyin all sciences.

The Institute participates in more than twenty international projects, runs long-term collaboration with about fifty scientists from other countries, andmeets yearly morethansixtyforeign contributors to internationalworkshopsorganizedatIGM. TheIGMresearchershave beeneditorsinmanydomesticandinternationalscientificjournalsand experts in various commissions of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian National Science Foundation, federal and regional administration and state corporations, as well as in the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles.

Theinstituteisinvolvedintocooperationwith other institutions in theRussian Academy of Sciences and its Siberian Branch and runs more than 50 integrated projects as part of various programs supported by the Academy Presidium and science foundations.

AlargepartofresearchatIGMis performedoncontracts for state ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of the Russian Federation.

Fiveschools of thoughthave taken shape and successfully developed at IGM, among the schools of V.S. Sobolev, Yu.A. Kuznetsov, and F.N.Shakhov active for at least 25 years.

More than 60 researchers are professors, associate professors, or assistant professors at different universities and other educational institutions, most of them teach at the Novosibirsk State University (NSU), where IGM shares training responsibility with NSU atfour subdepartments.

Doctoral and master theses are defended attwodissertationcommitteeswhere 3 and 7 dissertations onaveragearepresentedyearly for the doctor and candidate degrees, respectively.

The Institute possesses advanced instrumental facilities. The studies are supported by analyticalworkat the Analytical Center for multielement and isotope analyses. The analysts master classical and new methods of X-ray fluorescence, powder diffraction, mass spectrometry, microprobe analyses, and isotope dating applied to determine the major- and trace-element compositions, isotope systematics, structure, and ages of rocks and minerals. Since 1999 the Center has been certified by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology as a supplier of independent reliable analytical information(accreditation certificate ROSS RU.001.510590).

IGM is a founder of one small R&D company , and one international laboratory for real economy.

The Institute is a co-founder of two journals: the monthly scientific journal of Russian Geology and Geophysics (GeologiyaiGeofizika) and a quarterly popular journal Science First Hand (NaukaizPervykhRuk).

Foryears, IGM has been an active popular exponent of Earth sciences. It accommodates the Central Siberian Geological Museum which has been visited by more than 600 peoplesince its opening, mostly schoolchildren. Thecollectionexceeds 20,000 samples that represent over 1000 mineral species.
